1. Introduction to the National Library:
The National Library of China is located at 33 South Zhongguancun Street, adjacent to Baishiqiao Gao Lianghe and Zizhuyuan Park in Haidian District, Beijing. It serves as the national repository, national bibliographic center, and national ancient book protection center. It is one of the largest and most advanced national libraries in the world and was included in the third batch of 20th-century architectural heritage projects in China. On October 11, 2018, it was selected as a ‘National Research and Practice Education Base for Primary and Secondary School Students.’
The predecessor of the National Library of China was the Beijing Library, established on September 9, 1909. In 1931, the Wenjin Street library building was completed (now the Ancient Books Hall of the National Library). After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was renamed the Beijing Library. The new building was completed in 1987, and on December 12, 1998, with the approval of the State Council, the Beijing Library was renamed the National Library of China, also known as the National Library.
As of October 2018, the official website of the library indicated that the total floor area of the National Library of China is 280,000 square meters. The library consists of the South Wing, North Wing, and Ancient Books Hall. The main building of the South Wing is a double-tower high-rise structure with a double-eave roof, peacock blue glazed tile large roof, light gray ceramic tile exterior walls, granite base stone steps, complemented by Han white jade railings. The entire structure is themed in blue, symbolizing the caution against fire with the use of water. The library collection comprises 37.68 million volumes, including nearly 2 million ancient books. The total digital resource exceeds 1000TB, making it the largest library in Asia and the third-largest national library in the world. The library has 25 reading rooms, with over 5,000 reading seats, a staff of 1,529, and 33 organizational departments.
