The blank spaces between the ‘petals’ resemble traditional Chinese architectural landscape windows. The interaction between internal space and external landscape is achieved through innovative ‘floor-to-ceiling windows,’ while borrowed scenery endows the ‘Big Lotus Flower’ with a classical and romantic atmosphere beneath the steel framework. The petals are arranged in an interlocking pattern, each petal not being solid but structured like a translucent ‘cicada wing.’ The entire steel canopy of the stadium’s outer edge is approximately 333 meters long from north to south and about 285 meters long from east to west. After multiple rounds of optimization and improvement, the total steel used in the structure is only 28,000 tons, reducing 14,000 tons compared to the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in Beijing. As the main venue for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, the opening and closing ceremonies will be held here.

The gymnasium (Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium) has a total construction area of 74,470 square meters and approximately 18,000 seats (15,000 fixed seats and 3,000 movable seats on retractable platforms). It is suitable for basketball, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, handball, artistic gymnastics, boxing, martial arts, indoor soccer, and other competitions. It serves as the basketball venue for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. The gymnasium features a convertible ice basketball court, built to international event standards using advanced technology. The ice surface dimensions are 30m * 60m, totaling 1,800 square meters. The venue has a refrigeration system with ethylene glycol as the refrigerant for the ice surface. After ice formation, the venue can be rapidly converted to different configurations within 6 to 8 hours based on the requirements of various events. It is capable of hosting events such as NHL, KHL, curling, figure skating, short track speed skating, and more.
