1.The Introduction of the Uzbekistan Section of the Central Asia Natural Gas Pipeline:
The China-Central Asia Natural Gas Pipeline starts at the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan on the right bank of the Amu Darya River, passes through central Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan, enters China from Khorgos, and becomes the “West-East Gas Pipeline II.” The pipeline is approximately 10,000 kilometers long, with 188 kilometers in Turkmenistan, 530 kilometers in Uzbekistan, 1,300 kilometers in Kazakhstan, and the remaining approximately 8,000 kilometers within China. The pipeline is laid in dual AB lines, with a single line length of 1,833 kilometers, making it the world’s longest natural gas pipeline. The C line has also been laid, and the D line is currently under construction.
The A line of the China-Central Asia Natural Gas Pipeline commenced trial operation in early December 2009. The B line was scheduled to complete all welding work by the end of 2009, and it was expected to be put into operation between April and May 2010. After the completion of the project, during the 30-year operation period, approximately 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be stably transported from Central Asia to China each year, equivalent to about half of China’s total domestic natural gas production in 2007.
The terrain in Uzbekistan varies from high in the east to low in the west, with plains and desert landscapes dominating along the pipeline route. The terrain is generally flat, with minimal undulations, except for some hilly areas. Plains account for 79.1% of the area, while hills account for 20.9%. The section from the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan border point to the north of Navoi Kaskhkubko is 415 kilometers long and features a desert plain landscape, with surface soil exhibiting salinization. The section from the north of Navoi Kaskhkubko to the Uzbek-Kazakh border point is 110 kilometers long and characterized by low hills. The accompanying Gazarly-Chimkent pipeline causes severe sandification along both sides of the pipeline route, with sand dunes covering the pipeline’s accompanying road, resulting in poor transportation conditions. The seismic fortification intensity in the pipeline laying area in Uzbekistan is classified according to Russian national standards as 7-9 degrees, although specific distribution details are not provided.
