The new construction project of Shanghai Library East Branch is a major cultural facility construction project in Shanghai. Located adjacent to the Pudong Civic Center and facing Century Park, it will form a culturally influential area along with surrounding landmarks such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Oriental Art Center, Pudong Exhibition Hall, and Shanghai Museum East Branch.
Shanghai Library East Branch is situated in Pudong New Area, in close proximity to Shanghai’s largest urban park, Century Park, spanning 1.4 million square meters. The total construction area is 115,000 square meters. Currently, the construction project is underway with the expectation of completion in 2020, followed by a trial opening in 2021.
The design resembles a sculpture floating above the treetops of the park. The main structure of the library is built on top of two functional blocks, one accommodating a 1,200-seat performance venue, exhibition, and event spaces, and the other housing a children’s library. Both areas are oriented towards a series of landscaped courtyards.
Shanghai Library East Branch was mentioned as one of the projects in a speech by Shen Xiaoming, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Pudong District Party Committee, on October 28, 2015, when discussing three municipal-level projects and three Pudong projects.
