History of Shanghai Jiao Tong University:

Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School, one of the origins of higher education in China. It underwent name changes over the years, becoming Nanyang College in 1911, National Chiao Tung University in 1929, and simply Chiao Tung University in 1949. In 1955, the university relocated to Xi’an, dividing into the Shanghai and Xi’an campuses. In 1959, the two campuses became independent entities, and the Shanghai part adopted the name “Shanghai Jiao Tong University.” In 1999, the original Shanghai Agricultural College merged into SJTU, and in 2005, the university merged with the original Shanghai Second Medical University to form the present-day Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
