1.Introduction to the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Project:
The Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Station is located in Tangxing Village, Haiwei Town, Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province. It is designed to accommodate the construction of four large-scale nuclear power units, with a total investment of nearly 19 billion RMB, jointly funded and constructed by China National Nuclear Corporation and China Huaneng Group. The project involves the construction of two nuclear power units, with Unit 1 planned to be grid-connected and operational by the end of 2014. Construction of the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Station commenced on April 25, 2010, marking the largest, most technologically advanced, and environmentally friendly energy construction project in the history of Hainan.
According to Sun Qin, Chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation, the Changjiang Nuclear Power Project adopts mature domestic second-generation improved nuclear power technology, ensuring reliable technical safety. Each unit has a capacity of 650,000 kilowatts, which is well suited to meet the electricity demand of Hainan’s power grid. Preliminary estimates indicate significant environmental benefits, with the nuclear power units expected to reduce annual coal consumption by approximately 2.6 million tons, and decrease carbon dioxide emissions by about 7.8 million tons, particulate matter by 450 tons, sulfur dioxide by 1,600 tons, and nitrogen oxides by 9,700 tons compared to coal-fired power plants of equivalent capacity.
On April 19, 2010, the National Development and Reform Commission officially issued the approval document, indicating the formal approval of the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Project and the commencement of construction. Officials from the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Company disclosed that the National Nuclear Safety Administration had completed all pre-issuance review work for the construction permit of the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Project and issued the construction permit on the same day. The project is jointly funded by China National Nuclear Corporation (51%), China Huaneng Group (19%), and Huaneng International (30%). The first unit is scheduled to be operational for commercial use in 2015.
Progress: Commenced construction on April 25, 2010 (Unit 1 reactor dome was completed on December 28, 2011).
