1. Introduction to Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant:
Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant is the first 300,000-kilowatt pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant designed, constructed, and operated by China independently. It is wholly owned by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), with the operation and management responsibility undertaken by CNNC Nuclear Power Operation Management Co., Ltd. The plant adopts mature pressurized water reactor technology with three barriers inside the nuclear island, including fuel cladding, pressure vessel, and containment, capable of withstanding internal pressure, high temperature, and various natural disasters caused by extreme accidents.
Construction began on March 20, 1985, and it commenced operation in 1991, with an annual power generation capacity of 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours. The Phase II project started in 1996 to expand with the addition of two 600,000-kilowatt generating units. The Phase III project, a collaboration between China and Canada, constructed two 700,000-kilowatt generating units and was completed in 2003.
On January 12, 2015, at 17:00, Unit 2 of the Fangjiashan Nuclear Power Project, an expansion project of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, was successfully connected to the grid for power generation. With this, all nine units at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Base have been put into operation, with a total installed capacity of 6.564 million kilowatts and an annual power generation of approximately 50 billion kilowatt-hours, making it the nuclear power base with the highest number of units, the richest variety of reactor types, and the largest installed capacity in China.
