Huawei is set to build a new ‘Green Base’ at the Dongguan Songshan Lake, which boasts 8 square kilometers of freshwater and 14 square kilometers of ecological greenery.
This ‘Green Base’ is Huawei’s terminal headquarters base (not to be confused with the Southern Factory invested by Huawei in the northern part of Songshan Lake next to the New City Avenue in 2006). The project is located next to the Song Lake Flower Sea Scenic Area in the southern area of Songshan Lake, covering an area of 1,900 acres with a total construction area of approximately 1.267 million square meters. With a total investment of 10 billion yuan, the project started construction in September 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in May 2017. At that time, 30,000 research and development personnel will be gathered here. The plan is to relocate Huawei University, R&D Center, Pilot Center, and other functional carriers to Songshan Lake, driving Huawei’s terminal business and inevitably promoting the economic development of Songshan Lake and even Dongguan.
The Huawei Terminal Headquarters project will be constructed in the architectural style of European towns and will be divided into 12 architectural clusters, each imitating towns such as Oxford, Windermere, Luxembourg, Bruges, Freiburg, Burgundy, Verona, Paris, Granada, Bologna, Heidelberg, and Kremnica.
The site will feature a dedicated light rail connection. At the Huawei Songshan Lake base, riding the light rail, one can explore Europe every day without having to travel to Europe, experiencing various European attractions. It is estimated that after completion, it will become a beautiful tourist spot in Dongguan.
It is rumored that Ren Zhengfei has always hoped that Huawei would have an environment similar to that of companies like Apple or Google, with the most beautiful environment and pleasant scenes, characterized by a low-density urban area. The high-quality mountain and lake resources and cultural environment of Songshan Lake are in line with Huawei’s philosophy and Ren Zhengfei’s dream.

Why 12 clusters?
The physical distance of 300 meters between buildings within a cluster is the maximum size to ensure mutual communication in the workplace. The workplace, where work and life intersect, is also a stage for life. The design avoids the oppressive atmosphere brought by large buildings and instead opts for architectural clusters with pleasant spatial scales. This allows employees to relax and change the atmosphere amidst their busy work schedules.
Why reference these prototypes?
Songshan Lake is picturesque, with undulating hills. Considering the terrain is the basic starting point for selecting samples. Each cluster’s spatial prototype is prominent and impressive. The design uses a method of piecing together partial fragments of spatial prototypes according to the terrain, creating a sense of scenery with mountains and water.
Each cluster’s architectural prototype has its own appropriate building volume, rich material expressions, and beautiful architectural facades. The design uses modern techniques and methods for secondary creation, striving to create classics once again.
