Guangdong Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital Introduction:
Guangdong Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Second Clinical Medical College of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Guangdong Branch) was established in 1933. It is one of the earliest modern Chinese medicine hospitals in the history of China and is hailed as the ‘First Arbor in Nan Yue.’ Currently, the hospital has developed into a large comprehensive Chinese medicine hospital with six campuses: Dade Road Main Campus, Ersha Island Hospital, Fangcun Hospital (Guangzhou Charity Hospital), Zhuhai Hospital, University City Hospital, and Pazhou Hospital (Guangzhou United Family Hospital). It also manages the large-scale comprehensive Chinese medicine hospital Qiaoli Zhongyi Hospital (Guangdong Provincial Hospital Doumen Hospital) in Zhuhai. The hospital hosts Guangdong Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Training Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Guangdong Branch. The planned Guangdong Provincial Hospital South Nansha Hospital, with a land area of 160 acres and 1200 beds, is under construction.
For seven consecutive years, the hospital’s annual outpatient service has exceeded 7 million visits, with an average annual admission of 120,000 patients. It has 3,083 open beds, over 2.7 billion yuan worth of modern medical research equipment, and a daily consumption of over 13 tons of traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces. It is the largest Chinese medicine hospital in terms of the annual number of patients served, scale, and strength in the country. It is a pilot hospital for establishing a sound modern hospital management system nationwide, a hospital for building a national regional medical center, and one of the first batch of hospitals in Guangdong Province to build high-level hospitals. It has topped the national rankings for eight consecutive years in the competition among Chinese medicine hospitals.
The hospital has one National Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine, two nationally renowned Chinese medicine practitioners, three national ‘Qihuang Scholars,’ and 36 provincial-level renowned Chinese medicine practitioners. It is the Chinese medicine hospital with the most key specialties/disciplines in the national Chinese medicine system: 6 national clinical key specialties designated by the National Health Commission, 22 national key specialties designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 49 provincial-level clinical key specialties. The influence of the hospital’s specialties radiates throughout the province and even beyond. It has established collaborative relationships with more than 200 hospitals, led the formation of 22 specialty medical alliances, and established a ‘two-way referral’ cooperation model with 42 community health service centers in Guangzhou.
The hospital has always regarded ‘fully leveraging the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine and improving the clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine’ as the main theme of development. It has established the country’s first ‘Classic Chinese Medicine Ward’ and become one of the first pilot hospitals for innovative models of Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment. It has established the country’s first ‘Disease Prevention Center’ and ‘Chinese Medicine Chronic Disease Management Center,’ gradually forming a three-tier Chinese medicine ‘disease prevention’ service system for pre-disease, potential disease, and chronic diseases. It is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage project inheritance base, and the ‘Lingnan Traditional Moxibustion Therapy’ is a provincial-level intangible heritage project. The ‘Lingnan Chen’s Needle Method’ has been selected as a national-level intangible heritage project, earning recognition and praise from the public.
The hospital actively explores the integration of the Internet with Chinese medicine, providing patients with a one-stop ‘Internet + medical health’ service before, during, and after hospitalization, as well as between hospitals. It is the construction unit of Guangdong Province’s Internet Hospital. It pioneered the establishment of a smart pharmacy nationwide, making it more convenient for patients to seek medical treatment.
The hospital is committed to technological innovation, possessing a national clinical research base for Chinese medicine, a State Key Laboratory co-constructed by provinces and ministries for Chinese medicine damp-heat syndrome, a demonstration-type national international scientific and technological cooperation base designated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, a national new drug (Chinese medicine) clinical trial research center, a national stem cell clinical research institution, a Sino-Australian International Chinese Medicine Research Center designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and a Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Innovation Center, among other high-level institutions. It also has 7 key research laboratories designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and 3 provincial key laboratories. It has established a joint research base for Chinese medicine in Sweden with the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University, as well as cooperation with Utrecht University in the Netherlands, promoting Chinese medicine to the world. From 2007 to the present, it has undertaken more than 350 national-level projects and obtained a total of 67 provincial-level research achievements.
The hospital pursues excellence in technology, perfection in service, and credibility in reputation. It has been rated as a ‘National Civilization Unit’ for six consecutive sessions, producing advanced individuals such as ‘Most Beautiful Striver’ Ye Xin and ‘National Outstanding Communist Party Member’ Zhang Zhongde. It has built a good reputation in the hearts of the general public and gained the trust and praise of a large number of patients.
