1. Introduction to the Beijing National Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium:

The Beijing National Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, abbreviated as ‘Olympic Center Gymnasium,’ is a multifunctional stadium located on the north side of the National Olympic Sports Center. It is part of an arc that includes the uniquely designed athletics field, field hockey stadium, and swimming pool. The gymnasium’s floor plan is hexagonal, covering a total area of 4 hectares, with a building area of 25,338 square meters.

Surrounded by an artificial lake, walkways, and a plaza, the meticulous architectural layout, impressive structural design, and the clever combination of artificial gardens and architectural elements create a dynamic and varied open space. Construction began on April 28, 1987, and was completed on November 30, 1989, with a total construction period of 2 years and 6 months.

The architectural facade design closely aligns with the overall structure of the building. The roof, in particular, combines with the architectural form, featuring a domestically pioneering cable-stayed hyperbolic double-curved shell. The overall roof has dimensions of 80×112 meters, utilizing eight inclined cables on each side anchored to the roof ridge by reinforced concrete towers. The shell has a thickness of 3.3 meters, forming a unique combination structural system. The plan dimensions are reasonable, and the calculated steel usage is 60 kg/square meter.

The lower part of the gymnasium’s facade is treated with a simple and lively approach, with light-colored sprayed walls contrasting with dark-colored door and window frames, and blue-gray reflective glass creating a large area of virtual and real contrast. The south entrance hall of the gymnasium, with its lightweight framework and blue-gray reflective glass, stands out against the massive building entity in the background. The red framework at the entrance and the silver-gray rainwater pipes above are particularly vivid against the blue-gray glass. Circular windows on both sides of the gable and zigzag windows improve the proportion of the solid wall, making the facade distinctive and unique.

The gymnasium’s floor plan is hexagonal, with a distance of 99 meters between the east and west columns of the roof, and a north-south span of 70 meters. The multi-functional competition hall is a rectangular shape of 93×70 meters, with a central competition area of 42×73 meters. The competition area features a Danish-imported wooden floor and can host various sports events, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, handball, gymnastics, skill competitions, weightlifting, wrestling, and more.

The roof structure of the competition hall is entirely exposed, with no suspended ceiling. Lights are installed in the exposed structure for maintenance purposes. The roof uses 150mm thick composite corrugated steel plates. Spectator seats are made of colored fiberglass seats, and the entire competition hall is designed with a unified yet varied color pattern to achieve a rich visual effect when the venue is empty.
